OBTAINING VA PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
|
In order to receive prescription drugs, all veterans must be enrolled in the DVA Health Care System. Before drugs can be prescribed through D VA, it is necessary to be seen by a DVA primary care provider (physician or nurse practitioner). Upon completion of a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and agreement that the prescription drugs are needed, a prescription will be written. Based on your medical condition and the drugs prescribed, you may require follow-up medical visits.
When you come for your first DVA appointment, remember to bring your prescription drugs and a copy of your medical records from your doctor. Be sure to explain to the physician or nurse practitioner that you want to receive your prescription drugs through the DVA health Care System.
If you want the prescription drugs sent to your home, advise the doctor or nurse. The DVA has a mail-out pharmacy and most prescription drugs can be sent directly to your mailing address. This is a preferred way to get your medicines.
It is your responsibility to keep track of how many refills remain on a prescription and whether you have a 30-day supply, or a 90-day supply. The DVA pharmacy provides a Refill Requisition and Mailing Label with each prescription you receive. To reorder your medication through the mail, place the requisition in an envelope, place the mailing label on the envelope, and place appropriate postage on the envelope. Mail in your refill request at least 14 days before your medication is due to run out.
If you should forget the deadline, you may call the DVA pharmacy and request a refill. If you are using your last refill, be sure to contact your DVA physician or nurse practitioner to request a prescription renewal. Based on the type of prescription drug and your reaction to it, the doctor or nurse practitioner may request that you come in for a brief visit. |
