The Chatham Veteran's Memorial was dedicated on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2000. Chatham VFW Post 4763, American Legion Post 759, and the Village of Chatham have joined in a project to remember and honor all those who have served our country in a branch of the United States military. On the map, (view How to Find Us) the square is located along Main Street, between Mulberry Street and Chestnut Street, in the center of Chatham, Illinois.
The Chatham community has long honored those who served with a memorial on the village square. The original memorial was in an area along the east side of the square. The new memorial is located more in the center of the square, in a grassy area surrounded by old and recently planted trees. A children's' play area and a pavilion are nearby. The new memorial is of cement and masonry. It is an edifice befitting the solid resolve for independence and freedom that only those who live in the United States of America can know.
In an effort to give this project a personal theme, a major part of the memorial's construction is done with bricks bearing the name of a veteran. There is no restriction concerning residency, time in service, or military branch. All men and women who served in the military under honorable conditions are eligible to have their name displayed on the Chatham Veteran's Memorial. All veterans of the United States military will be honored. A veteran DOES NOT have to be a VFW, or American Legion member to be honored.
This is a perfect way to honor family members and friends who served our nation in military service. By the way, bricks in honor of family members who served in different branches, or at different times, can be grouped together. You DO NOT have to be a VFW, or American Legion member to order a memorial brick. Think of how proud each veteran will be to know that his or her patriotic service is appreciated and remembered by family and friends. Think of how proud you will be.
To help offset the cost of construction and ongoing maintenance, Post 4763 and Post 759 are coordinating the purchase of the memorial bricks. The cost of these tastefully done bricks is $50.00 each. Each brick will be inscribed with the veteran's name, branch of service, theatre (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, or Persian Gulf), or with the time served.
